Construction grade HPMC and HEMC / MHEC are the most commonly used cellulose ether products in drymix building materials. They are used in tile adhesive, wall putty, cement plaster, gypsum plaster, mortar, EIFS / ETICS systems, repair mortar, self-leveling compounds, and other drymix construction products. Their primary functions are water retention, workability improvement, open time extension, and anti-sag support.

Paint grade HEC is the most widely used cellulose ether in water-based paints and architectural coatings. It provides thickening, rheology control, pigment suspension, flow and leveling support, and storage stability. In selected coating systems, HPMC or CMC may also be considered depending on formulation design and performance requirements.

Detergent grade HEC, HPMC, and CMC may all be used depending on the specific formulation. HEC and HPMC are used to improve viscosity and texture in liquid detergents and cleaners. CMC is especially important in laundry detergent systems because of its anti-redeposition function — it helps prevent loosened soil from redepositing onto fabrics during washing.

Suitable food-grade CMC (also labeled as cellulose gum in food products) and suitable food-grade HPMC may be used in food systems for thickening, stabilization, texture control, water binding, and film forming. Food applications require compliant grades with appropriate documentation, and product selection must be reviewed according to the regulations of the target market. Not every cellulose ether grade is suitable for food use.

Suitable pharmaceutical-grade HPMC and CMC are used in pharmaceutical formulations for tablet binding, tablet film coating, controlled-release matrix systems, capsule-related applications, pharmaceutical suspensions, and topical formulations. Pharmaceutical applications require proper grade selection, technical documentation, regulatory review, and customer-side formulation validation. Not every industrial cellulose ether grade is suitable for pharmaceutical use.

Ceramic grade CMC is the most commonly used cellulose ether in ceramic production. It is used as a binder, suspension stabilizer, and process aid in ceramic tile body, ceramic glaze, extrusion systems, powder pressing, and slip casting. Its key functions include binding, green strength improvement, suspension stability, and glaze stability.

Oilfield grade CMC and selected HEC products are used in water-based drilling fluids, completion fluids, fluid-loss control systems, and specialty oilfield fluid applications. CMC is the primary choice for most oilfield fluid applications due to its viscosity-building and filtration control performance. HEC may be preferred in systems where non-ionic behavior is required.
