To increase the bonding strength between the foam polystyrene boards and the mortar, you may consider adding a certain amount of non-ionic cellulose ether.
Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), also called external thermal insulation composite system(ETICS), serves as an important protective measure for buildings. It prevents exterior walls from direct exposure to the atmospheric environment, thereby protecting against moisture, corrosion, and damage.
LANDERCOLL manufactures high-quality Cellulose ether that delivers significant improvement for your EIFS finish system. HPMC(Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose) and Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose(HEMC) are two common water-soluble, non-ionic cellulose ethers derived from natural resources. These essential finish additives offer:
The EIFS typically include adhesive mortars, insulation boards, mechanical fasteners, system profiles and accessories, base coats, EIFS grade glass fiber mesh, primers, decorative finish coats, and top coats.
Introducing HPMC or HEMC could help the EIFS finish system:
According to the EIFS Industry Members Association(EIMA), “EIFS is a non-load-bearing exterior wall cladding system that consists of an insulation board attached adhesively or mechanically, or both, to the substrate; an integrally reinforced base coat; and a textured protective finish coat. “
Compared to EIFS, stucco is a 20 -40 mm solid plaster finish made from a mixture of Portland cement, lime, sand, and water, applied over metal lath or masonry substrates.
While stucco can crack in the field of the wall, EIFS installed properly typically does not produce cracks. Also, EIFS features an exterior finish that will not yellow or fade, as is often the case with traditional stucco.
EIFS requires careful installation of air and moisture barriers to prevent water from getting trapped behind the system. Stucco is more porous and allows moisture to evaporate, but proper drainage is necessary to prevent moisture issues.
EIFS is more expensive due to materials and installation, but requires less frequent maintenance, while stucco may incur higher long-term maintenance costs.
* In summary, EIFS is suitable due to its highly flexible aesthetic and insulating qualities, and stucco is more resistant to extremely wet climates.
LANDERCOLL EM100 grade Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose is recommended to be applied in the thermal mortar in the EIFS finish due to increased adhesion, flexibility, and impact resistance.

The installation of EIFS can be more expensive than traditional stucco, but the former provides long-term savings due to its superior insulation properties, which can lead to lower costs and reduced maintenance needs.
HPMC improves the bonding strength between the insulation board and the mortar and maintain adequate moisture levels during the curing process. By increasing the opening time of the mortar, HPMC also provides installers with more flexibility during application. It also enhances the thixotropic behavior of the mortar, preventing sagging or slumping on vertical surfaces. HPMC also contributes to crack resistance by minimizing shrinkage and accommodating thermal expansion and contraction within the EIFS layers.
