Masonry Mortar Additives

Masonry mortar is a critical construction material used to bind together masonry units such as bricks, blocks, and stones. It is also used to fill the gaps between various building materials, improving the insulation, waterproofing, and soundproofing properties of the building.

LANDERCOLL is a dedicated manufacturer of Cellulose Ether, an effective additive derived from cellulose widely used in the construction field. Our additives such as HPMC(Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose) and Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose(HEMC) enhance water control ability, bonding strength, and workability for various masonry mortar formulas.

Masonry mortar can be classified into:

Ordinary Masonry Mortar

Typically applied in thicker layers, usually ranging from 10 mm to 20 mm or more.

Thin-layer Masonry Mortar

Designed for application in much thinner layers, generally between 1 mm and 3 mm.

Lightweight Masonry Mortar

Reduce the overall density of the mortar (typically below 1300 kg/m³).

Moisture and Water Damage

Cracks and Mortar Deterioration

HPMC and HEMC significantly enhance the water retention capacity of masonry mortar. Proper hydration is essential for achieving strong bonds and reducing the likelihood of cracks and delamination.

Efflorescence

The presence of HPMC and HEMC can form a hydrophobic film as a barrier against water penetration, preventing liquid water from reaching soluble salts within the mortar. This helps reduce the potential for efflorescence formation.

Masonry Spalling

LANDERCOLL Cellulose ether enhances the adhesion of masonry mortars, reducing the likelihood of delamination or separation between layers, which can lead to spalling when moisture penetrates through cracks or weak points.

Thermal Cracking

The incorporation of HPMC and HEMC increases the flexibility of the mortar, allowing the mortar to better accommodate thermal expansion and contraction without cracking.

What is the Masonry Mortar Mix Ratio?

LANDERCOLL provides a referenced formula of ordinary masonry mortar as follows but only for reference. Please conduct experimental verification before use and adjust the formula based on the actual situation.

  • Cement: 12 ~ 25%
  • Calcium Hydroxide : 0 ~ 6%
  • Calcium Carbonate: 10 ~ 20%
  • Cellulose Ether(LANDERCOLL HPMC-K40H): 0.02 ~ 0.1%
  • Air-entraining agent: 0.01 ~ 0.02
  • Sand

What Are The Properties of Masonry Mortar?

Masonry mortar has good workability. It possesses excellent adhesion, creating a durable, stable, and solid overall structure between masonry units. Masonry mortar also features low plastic shrinkage and drying shrinkage, maximizing the dimensional stability of the wall. For lightweight masonry mortar, it meets the requirements for thermal insulation performance and matches the properties of self-insulating materials such as hollow blocks.

How Long Does Masonry Mortar Take To Cure?

The curing time for masonry mortar can vary but typically takes about 24 to 48 hours to set sufficiently for light handling. Full curing may take several weeks, depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity.

Is Masonry Mortar Resistant to Freeze-Thaw Cycles?

Yes, masonry mortar demonstrates resistance to freeze-thaw cycles. According to the technical performance requirements for masonry mortar products, after undergoing 50 freeze-thaw cycles, the strength loss rate should not exceed 25%.
