Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose | MHEC | HEMC Solutions

Effective HEMC Chemical For Various Industries

Your Reliable Manufacturer of Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose

  • Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose(HEMC), also known as Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose(MHEC), is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether. It is a tasteless and odorless polymer powder that can disperse in cold water after being surface treated.
  • LANDERCOLL® Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is widely used in water-based paints, building materials (especially in dry-mix mortar), and oil drilling industries. It serves as a thickening agent, moisutre-retaining agent, bonding enhancer, rheological additive and modifier.
  • As a reputable supplier of Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, LANDERCOLL® provides safe, effective, and innovative HEMC chemicals you can rely on.

The Main Differences Between HPMC and HEMC\MHEC Chemical

Gelation Temperature

For HPMC, the gelation temperature ranges from 55℃ to 75℃(131℉ to 167℉), while HEMC has a higher gelation temperature falling between 70℃ and 90℃(158℉ to 194℉). This makes HEMC more resistant to temperature fluctuations.

Solubility

HPMC is more soluble in cold water, while Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose tends to dissolve in hot water. So the latter is more suitable for applications that require rapid dissolution or gelation.

Viscosity

HEMC polymer generally provides higher viscosity at lower concentrations compared to HPMC. Thus, you can choose HPMC and HEMC based on the requirement for flexibility and viscosity.

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I Dissolve HEMC in Organic Solvents?

Yes, HEMC exhibits superior solubility in polar organic solvents compared to water. It readily dissolves in methanol, ethanol, and acetone, with moderate solubility in ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. Unlike HPMC, HEMC demonstrates enhanced compatibility with ketones and esters, making it ideal for solvent-based coating systems.

What Does HEMC Stand For?

HEMC is the acronym for Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose, a cellulose derivative where hydroxyl groups are substituted with methyl (-OCH₃) and hydroxyethyl (-OCH₂CH₂OH) groups. This dual substitution enhances thermal stability (up to 180°C) and salt tolerance vs. HPMC.

Why Is HEMC Preferred in Exterior Insulation Systems?

HEMC’s balanced hydroxyethyl/methyl ratio provides:

  • Extended open time (90+ minutes at 25°C) for large-area application
  • Improved freeze-thaw resistance (withstands 50+ cycles per ASTM C666)
  • Reduced efflorescence due to lower ash content (<0.5%)

How to Evaluate HEMC Quality?

Key assessment parameters:

  1. Viscosity consistency (e.g., 2% solution at 20°C: 10,000-100,000 mPa·s)
  2. Gelation temperature (typically 65-90°C vs. HPMC’s 50-70°C)
  3. Ionic purity (Na⁺ <500 ppm, Cl⁻ <300 ppm)
  4. Mortar adhesion (EN 1348 pull-off strength ≥0.5 MPa)

Can HEMC Replace HPMC in Tile Adhesives?

While both are cellulose ethers, HEMC offers:

  • Higher water retention (98% vs. 95% for HPMC per EN 1346)
  • Better sag resistance on vertical surfaces
  • Longer adjustability time (up to 40 minutes)

However, HPMC remains more cost-effective for standard interior applications.
